TeleCayman expands Fiber Optic Network
October 2009 - Growing telecommunications company TeleCayman has announced that it has expanded its fiber optic network along West Bay Road, and is now providing services to Grand Pavilion.
The network was originally launched in George Town in May 2009, and now runs from the George Town business district, onto Camana Bay, then along West Bay Road.
TeleCayman's fiber optic network complements TeleCayman’s existing advanced wireless network, and enhances a product portfolio targeting Cayman companies that need data solutions for high speed internet, metro ethernet, international networking, business continuity and telephone services.
TeleCayman Director of Technical Operations, Robert Kanner, advises that the TeleCayman network is configured in what is commonly referred to as a ring formation, offering alternate back up paths to buildings on the network. The TeleCayman wireless network will be able to offer a further additional back up path. “The speed of fiber optic networking is up to a 1 gigabit per second, and that creates opportunities for us to provide new services like metro ethernet, storage area networking, and co-location for customers that want their mission critical data transmitted in an instant.”
At the heart of TeleCayman's fiber optic and wireless networks is the Network Operations and Business Continuity Center, which was recently been upgraded to handle the new technology. This facility is housed on the fourth floor of the Cayman Corporate Centre, considered one of the island’s premier offices for business continuity due to its strong reinforced concrete construction.
In addition to building a fiber network within the Cayman Islands, TeleCayman in conjunction with its sister company, TeleBermuda International Ltd, also upgraded its transmission switching capabilities at their shared international networking hubs. These switching hubs, currently located in Miami, New York and Hamilton (Bermuda), offer customers the ability to network simply and efficiently to international sites using state of the art Wide Area Network (WAN) services.
